What is a Direct Access barrister?
A Direct Access barrister is a fully qualified legal professional who can advise you, draft documents, and represent you in court without you needing to instruct a solicitor first. The Bar Council introduced this scheme in 2004 to give members of the public a more direct route to specialist legal help.
Do I still need a solicitor as well?
In most cases, no. Through Direct Access you can instruct a barrister directly for advice, drafting, and court representation. If your case genuinely requires a solicitor for specific tasks such as complex evidence gathering or litigation management, we will be upfront about that from the start.
How does Barrister Connect work?
You tell us about your legal issue using our short form. Our team reviews your enquiry, identifies the most suitable barrister from our network, and sends you a clear fixed fee quote. If you are happy to proceed, you work directly with your barrister from that point onwards.
Is it cheaper than using a solicitor?
Often yes. You remove one layer of professional fees from the process. Rather than paying a solicitor to instruct a barrister on your behalf, you pay one specialist directly. We will give you a clear quote so you can consider your options before committing to anything.
How much does it cost to instruct a barrister?
Fees depend on the complexity of your case, the type of hearing involved, and the level of experience of the barrister. We provide a clear, upfront fixed fee quote before you commit to anything. Visit our fees page for indicative ranges by case type. All fees are quoted + VAT.
How quickly can I be matched with a barrister?
In most cases we match you within 24 to 48 hours of receiving your enquiry. For urgent cases with a hearing date within days, we regularly arrange same-day or next-day matching. Please include your hearing date when you submit your enquiry so we can prioritise accordingly.
Can I get help for an urgent court hearing?
Yes. We handle emergency barrister matching regularly and often arrange representation at very short notice. If you have a hearing within the next seven days, let us know immediately by ticking the urgent box on our form and we will treat your enquiry as a priority.
Do you offer legal aid or no win no fee?
Barrister Connect operates on a private fee basis. We do not offer legal aid or no win no fee arrangements. We do however provide transparent fixed fee quotes so you know exactly what you are committing to before you proceed. All fees are quoted + VAT.
Am I eligible to use Direct Access?
Most people are eligible. You can use Direct Access if your case is reasonably defined and you are comfortable managing the administrative aspects of your matter yourself. If your case involves very complex litigation, extensive evidence gathering, or major procedural steps, a solicitor may also be needed alongside your barrister. We will advise you on this when you submit your enquiry.
What areas of law do you cover?
We cover family law, employment law, property and landlord disputes, commercial and contract law, probate and inheritance, public law, defamation and media, and motor offences. If you are unsure whether your matter falls within these areas, submit an enquiry and our team will advise you.
Yes. We operate across all of England and Wales. Our barristers cover courts in London, the North West, Midlands, South West, South East, North East, and Wales. Many hearings now take place remotely, which means geography is rarely a barrier to finding the right representation.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. All information you provide is treated in strict confidence and stored securely in line with our legal and regulatory obligations. We do not share your details with third parties without your explicit consent. Your enquiry is seen only by the Barrister Connect team and the barrister we identify for your case.
