Called to the Bar in 1982, Huw Shepheard undertakes litigation, advisory work and drafting over a range of practice areas including regulatory prosecutions and motoring offences.
He is a team player who enjoys working with lay and professional clients to identify and resolve problems in a way that is best suited to the client's needs, and is able to conduct proceedings in Welsh.
Huw is an experienced advocate at all levels of court and tribunal. He is a leading barrister, has presided over a public inquiry in Jersey and has worked overseas, including serving as the Attorney General of a British Overseas Territory.
Crime & Motoring Law
Huw appears at public inquiries, hearings and examinations and in the High Court acting for applicants, appellants, local authorities, statutory undertakers and third parties, as well as dealing with planning enforcement proceedings in the criminal courts.
He appears in criminal and quasi-criminal proceedings in the Magistrates' Courts, including defending clients faced with local authority regulatory prosecutions (including planning enforcement, local authority prosecutions and HMRC investigations) and the full range of motoring offences (including speeding, driving under the influence and dangerous driving).
Huw also has extensive experience of running exceptional hardship arguments on behalf of his clients. He is frequently instructed to advise and represent clients in relation to licensing matters, including Taxi licence appeals in the Magistrates' Court. Huw also accepts instructions to deal with Proceeds of Crime Act
In working with clients, Huw prefers to get involved at an early stage to ensure that any negotiation or dispute is managed to best advantage through the courts or if appropriate, mediation or ADR.
He speaks Welsh and English and has experience of conducting proceedings in Welsh. He also has some knowledge of French, German, Italian and Russian.
