Lorraine was called to the Bar in 1997, and then cross-qualified as a solicitor and worked as such for five years between 1997 and 2002.

She appears regularly in Employment Tribunal and fluctuating cases before the EAT throughout the year. She has acted for the whole range of individual and corporate clients from national and international size businesses, Unions and their clients, Police officer and police forces, Councils, the NHS and GP surgeries.

Background

Lorraine practices in all areas of employment law. She began practice as a Barrister in 2002, primarily in Immigration and Employment, but with a mix of civil work and time both in Housing and Education, and currently holds appointments in three jurisdictions which take her across the country.

Lorraine has taught employment law part time as a module at graduate level in 2022 and 2023. In 2010 Lorraine contributed to “Age Estimation in the Living” The Practitioners Guide, published by Wiley-Blackwell. In 2011 Lorraine was invited to participated in the “COI in Judicial Practice” conference in Budapest covering country evidence collation across Europe and Australia and New Zealand and Judicial Review. Lorraine also spent time in Kenya in 2013 and 2014 whilst instructed as Counsel in the Mau Mau Litigation, see below. During her time there she was able to assist in the training/best practice witness evidence for Kenyan case workers and lawyers and research in local archives.

Lorraine is a trained mediator with the Society of Mediation and acted as an independent panel member in 2021/2 alongside the highly accomplished workplace mediator the late Clive Lewis OBE DL and a former High Court Judge, deciding an internal dispute between members of a legal Regulatory body appointed through CEDR.

Lorraine has appeared on various radio, podcasts and television stations as an expert on various topics from prevalence of “Sexual harassment in the workplace” through to the impact of R (AAA & Others) v Secretary of State for the Home Department UKSC 42 and The Nationality and Borders Act 2022.

Lorraine has been instructed in several judicial review claims in 2023/4, and all have settled by consent with costs. One of interest involved bringing a case on behalf of a home office registered Interpreter who had been barred acting as an interpreter for the home office by the Interpreter Management Unit. 

Lorraine gave a number of talks in 2024 and 2025 on topics such as on best practice for court and tribunal interpreters, for witnesses in court and tribunal proceedings and for practitioners dealing with vulnerable clients in an advisory and litigation context. Lorraine qualified as a Pupil Supervisor in 2024 and successfully saw her first pupil through the process and on to tenancy. Lorraine is a mentor.

Notable Cases

  • In 2023 and continuing Lorraine represented a former police constable before the Employment Tribunal who brought claims against the Chief Constable of Lancashire and an individual claim against a Chief Superintendent. The Tribunal unanimously found in favour of the police officer and the case attracted media attention due to the mental health difficulties the officer faced and the way she was treated.
  • In 2023 in Lorraine successfully represented an international Management and Service provider in Employment proceedings before the Summary court in the Falkland Islands involving a former employee from Brazil stationed in a military base in the Falkland Islands.
  • In 2024 Lorraine acted for a UK based Management and Service provider in group litigation regarding the allegations against Overseas Detainee Custody Officers which was the subject of a Guardian newspaper report on the 14.04.2021 and the Sunday Mirror front page exclusive article on the 19.02.2022 and other publications. The press exposed a WhatsApp group of 80 Mitie staff alleged to have engaged in racist and offensive communications when caring for home office detained foreign nationals.
